DEPLORABLE MANIA: A poetry workshop

May 20 – June 10, 2015

“Deplorable mania, when something happens, to inquire what.” —Samuel Beckett

The act of inquiry is the beginning of our individual manias. As writers, we can be astounded, confused and awed by the world. We will bring our dementias, our obsessions and our thirsts into the workshop. Here, writing is brave and unapologetic. We will let ourselves be unlikeable within our own work.

Each workshop sessions will include reading a wide variety of contemporary American poems, further familiarizing ourselves with the contemporary poetry scene, as well as engaging in generative writing exercises and workshopping individual poems. Prose writers are very welcome to explore their poetic sides! This workshop also includes an optional 30-minute private conference with the instructor (to be scheduled individually).

SURPRISE & DANGER: A POETRY WORKSHOP

February 25 – March 18, 2015

Surprise and danger—linguistic, formal, or narrative—locate the energy in a poem. Drawing out that energy, placing it at the fore of a poem’s character, can be easier said than done.  In this workshop, we’ll court one danger and one surprise in every session. Writers will be encouraged to find the moments of energy in their writing and seize them, develop them, bring the devil into them. We are made of our manias, here’s a chance to let their hair down.

Workshop meetings will include writing exercises and a chance to bring in existing writing for peer review. We will also discuss published work that takes risks, shouts from the rooftops, or turns unexpectedly—either in form, content, or both. Prose writers are very welcome to explore their poetic sides! The strategies of finding surprise and danger in writing apply just as equally to prose. This workshop also includes an optional 30-minute private conference with the instructor (to be scheduled individually).

Held at the San Francisco Writer's Grotto.
